“The events that followed were not indicative of what we expect to see in Des Moines,” Wingert said. “We’re better than that.”
Police said only three officers were directing traffic at the event when a group swarmed and attacked an officer, damaging his vehicle.
“That’s what prompted our response. We didn’t even step foot out of this building until one of our people was attacked,” Sgt. Paul Parizek said.
Taking place this morning:
Many people dropping off water, pizza, donuts, coffee, flowers, balloons, and signs to the Des Moines law enforcement who are still out guarding their police station this morning. Many people driving by honking and waving as well. It’s all to support those who are working hard to keep people safe as protests turned into riots yesterday.
There were also tons of people coming out to help clean up last night.
Sgt. Parizek said they have about 20 officers with injuries, all minor. He doesn’t think there was a single officer who wasn’t hit with a brick/rock/other items or was spit at. He even said some were doused with a gallon jug of what they believed to be urine.
