Today, the Iowa Senate passed HF 631. This is the Iowa Fraternal Order of Police’s bill, which makes the Brady Giglio bill provisions set to expire on 7/1/23 permanent. While a small bill, it also closes a loophole in the law to protect confidential records concerning law enforcement officers, including their medical records, in the possession of a prosecuting agency from public disclosure. We would like to thank Senator Brad Zaun for his leadership on this complex issue, introducing the companion bill, and seeing this to the end, Representative Mike Vondran for managing this bill through the house, and Representative Phil Thompson for introducing this for us. This bill passed unanimously through BOTH the house and senate, so thank you to each and every representative and senator for their votes. It’s a very small bill, but important for law enforcement.
