Last night, Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at the City Council meeting, Bettendorf Police Chief Keith Kimball had the honor of presenting Officer Patrick Mesick with the Exceptional Service award for his actions on September 3rd, 2020.
The Exceptional Service award can be presented when an officer performs a remarkable police accomplishment under adverse conditions where hazard to life and limb exists or death or injury to a third party occurs.
As detailed on the award certificate, on September 3rd, 2020, at approximately 1153hrs, Officer Patrick Mesick and numerous other Bettendorf Police Officers responded to the 1100 block of 16 ½ Street reference an unknown disturbance. It was later revealed that the occupants of an in-home daycare, both children and adults, were being held against their will with the life of a 3 year child being placed in immediate danger.
Upon their arrival, officers quickly assessed the situation and, realizing they could not wait, began to attempt entry. Officer Mesick took immediate and decisive action to resolve the situation when the fleeting opportunity presented itself. Officer Mesick’s quick thinking and lack of hesitation immediately ended an extremely volatile situation, saving the life of the 3 year old child and ensuring the safety of the other occupants in the residence.
Officer Mesick‘s performance in the line of duty is in keeping with the finest traditions of the police profession and reflects great credit upon himself and The Bettendorf Police Department.
Thank you to Officer Mesick and all the responding officers that day who worked together seamlessly to resolve the difficult situation without harm to innocent civilians. We are proud of all of you!
