This is heartbreaking to any police officer dedicated to their community. We will not allow the few to overshadow our silent majority. We will remain dedicated to the safety of our communities. #communitystrength #iowastrong

Des Moines,

Yesterday, DMPD had the honor of sharing a podium with the NAACP, a State legislator, and a crime victim’s father as we talked about justice being served, and plans to improve the criminal justice system. Shared values, shared goals. Together we have the strength to be the change.

Last night during a two-hour period, the DMPD responded to multiple calls for service in the immediate area of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park during one organization’s “peaceful” protest. Those calls from the Western Gateway residential area included reports of streets being blocked, fireworks, loud music, and passersby being spit upon.

Today, families arrived at the Sculpture Park to find graffiti left behind by the protesters. This afternoon, another “peaceful” protest at a local grocery store resulted in customers being turned away from or stuck inside a local business, and a police car was destroyed.

The investigation of the Darquan Jones case is one of the latest examples of our dedication to solving violent crimes, while collaborating with local community leaders to affect meaningful change in the laws that keep our city safe. Take note of who is dedicated and committed to making a difference and doing right by our community, and who is determined to destroy progress and dialogue.

Our officers are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

No matter what happens, we’ll be here for you again tomorrow.
